OMHA Communication on Referees
To All NMHA Members,
The OMHA has requested that ALL registrants receive the message below. While it is not specifically in reference to the NMHA and primarily refers to on-ice officials for Rep games, it is also applicable to House League programs as the same officials take care of both programs and unfortunately the House League program is not immune to the type of behaviour being referred too. We are all governed by the OMHA Code of Conduct and it is important to remember that our children take cues from the adults.
We are losing Referee’s at an unsustainable rate for a myriad of reasons, not the least of which, is the continual level of verbal abuse they seem to have to endure from all sides and the message below serves as a reminder to us all that we all need to lead by example and set the appropriate tone while we are watching our children play a game.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
Newmarket Minor Hockey Association
Ladies and Gentlemen
The referees are running on fumes.
Many games have been rescheduled due to the severe weather conditions. It has taxed the on-ice official pool to the maximum. You will not schedule a playoff series five days in a row, but you expect the on-ice officials to be available every day and take the game assignments. They also have a limit; they have family and most have full time jobs.
No officials no game.
We must remember the officials make mistakes and miss calls, but their heart is in the right place. It doesn’t help the situation when the officials get bombarded with verbal tirades from the stands or the bench . The way things are going, we will soon be cancelling games because there are insufficient officials to assign for scheduled games. There are literally hundreds of OMHA Playdown; “AAA”, “AA”, “A” and “AE” York Simcoe games every two weeks. That does not include house league and local league assignments. I hope you appreciate the number of officials required to fill the assignments.
Just for reference; The Preliminary Round for York Simcoe – OMHA Playdown and York Simcoe Playoffs required 94 contracts – approximately 370 games and the “AAA” Playdowns had not started. Now even more series and round robin contracts are being filled.
You may not want to hear this but OMHA Playdowns will take priority when assignments are filled.
Advise your coaches they set the tone for tolerance. We recommend a separate meeting with the parents to remind the parents and players, the game is played on the ice, not in the stands. Come to the game, acknowledge the competition. Stop the verbal abuse of officials and the opposing team.
We have witnessed far too many incidents of unsportsmanlike conduct and have dealt with too many complaints of adults failing to conduct themselves appropriately. If you don’t have something good to say, zip it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The unacceptable behavior is exhibited by a few but it reflects on all of us. It is not accepted in the boardroom, the office, in school or at home, it must not be tolerated at the arena.
It is not our intention to punish the masses for the sins of a few, but everyone must be part of the solution. The verbal abuse of officials and opponents must stop.
Please pass this message to all representative coaches and house league and local league conveners, immediately.

YSMHL Body Checking and Concussion Survey
Hope this email finds you well.
The York Simcoe Minor Hockey League (YSMHL) is conducting a league wide member survey to determine member opinions on Safety in Minor Hockey.
The three main issues addressed in the survey are Body Checking, Concussion Management and Concussion Education. The survey will run from March 6 - March 21. As a member driven organization we seek to ensure that our practices are aligned with the values of the participants in the game.
We ask that you kindly post this link on your website and/or send out an email blast to your membership and they can just click on it to fill in.
The survey asks for respondents' views on the appropriateness of body checking at various ages and levels, the demand for non body checking leagues and attitudes around concussion management and concussion education.
We ask that EACH parent or guardian complete a survey for EACH child registered in YSMHL.
